Who Makes Capri Cigarettes, and Why Some Packs Say Caprice

In the United States, Capri is owned and manufactured by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, founded in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1875. The company is part of Reynolds American Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of British American Tobacco plc, the group founded in 1902 and listed on the London Stock Exchange. BAT’s global cigarette portfolio includes Dunhill, Kent, Lucky Strike, Pall Mall, Rothmans and Vogue.

The brand has been sold in Germany as Caprice since September 1987, and German-market packs name British American Tobacco (Germany) as the producer. British American Tobacco’s Ukrainian subsidiary, formed in 1993 on the basis of the Pryluky tobacco factory, lists Capri among the brands it manufactures, and the group’s Hong Kong company lists Capri among the brands available in that market. The name comes from the island of Capri, in the Gulf of Naples, Italy.

A Super Slim Format Introduced in 1987

The first American Capri appeared in 1956 as Capri Rainbows, introduced by Lee Brothers Tobacco. Brown & Williamson relaunched the brand in 1987 as the first super slim cigarette, with a circumference of 17 mm and a length of 100 mm. In 2004 the U.S. operations of Brown & Williamson merged with R.J. Reynolds to form Reynolds American Inc., and Capri has been an R.J. Reynolds brand since that date. The U.S. range also includes 120 mm versions. This store’s cigarettes range includes two Capri lines, both in the Super Slims format.
