Who Makes Chesterfield and Who Owns the Name
Outside the United States, Chesterfield is produced and marketed by Philip Morris International Inc. Inside the United States the name is owned by Altria Group, Inc. and produced by its subsidiary Philip Morris USA. The division dates from 1999, when Liggett sold the Chesterfield, L&M and Lark brands to Philip Morris Companies Inc., the predecessor of Altria. Philip Morris International Inc. was spun off from Altria on 28 March 2008 and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol PM.
The Philip Morris companies trace their origins to a tobacconist’s shop opened on Bond Street in London in 1847. Chesterfield itself appeared in 1873, introduced by the Drummond Tobacco Company of St. Louis, Missouri. In 1912 the brand passed to Liggett & Myers, which moved production to Durham, North Carolina. Philip Morris introduced the brand in the United Kingdom in 2011 with the Red, Blue and Menthol lines.
