Hand-Rolling & Pipe
Made in Joure by Van Nelle Tabak
The brand was introduced in 1952 by Douwe Egberts and has been produced in the Netherlands through successive owners. It is now made by Van Nelle Tabak Nederland B.V., whose factory at Joure publishes an annual output of more than 300 million packs of shag and names Drum among the brands produced there. In 1998 the tobacco business of Douwe Egberts Van Nelle, including Drum and Van Nelle, passed to Imperial Tobacco, since renamed Imperial Brands plc, headquartered in Bristol, United Kingdom, and listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Territorial arrangements differ. In the United States the brand is produced by Republic Tobacco under licence from the owner. In the United Kingdom the tobacco was historically sold as Duma, because the Drum trade mark there was registered by Gallaher; the EU trade mark is held by Van Nelle Tabak Nederland B.V.
The Leaf and Cut of the Two Stocked Lines
The tobacco is a fine-cut shag intended for hand rolling. The Original line belongs to the halfzware class of Dutch shag and combines dark Kentucky with bright Virginia leaf. Beyond the two lines stocked here, the wider Drum range includes Gold and Dark Kentucky; not every line is sold in every country.
The Drum Lines Stocked in This Store
Both lines are supplied as sealed pouches and are listed under hand-rolling tobacco. Line names and their pouch colours are identifiers printed on the pack.

Drum Questions, Answered
Van Nelle Tabak Nederland B.V., a subsidiary of Imperial Brands plc, produces Drum in Europe. Production is concentrated at the company’s factory in Joure, in the Dutch province of Friesland.
Imperial Brands plc, headquartered in Bristol, United Kingdom, and listed on the London Stock Exchange, owns the Drum brand. The group has held it since 1998, when it acquired the tobacco business of Douwe Egberts Van Nelle.
Drum is made in Joure, the Netherlands. Douwe Egberts, which introduced the brand in 1952, was founded in Joure in 1753, and the town remains the site of the factory that produces it today.
Drum was introduced in 1952 by Douwe Egberts as a fine-cut shag. In the years that followed, production was divided between the company’s tobacco factories in Joure and Drachten.
Drum Original combines dark Kentucky and bright Virginia leaf in the halfzware class, a standard designation within Dutch shag. The cut is fine, for hand rolling.
The Drum pouches stocked in this store contain 40 g of fine-cut tobacco. Depending on the market, Drum pouches are also sold in 30 g and 50 g sizes elsewhere in Europe.
This store dispatches EU duty-paid Drum pouches carrying the tax stamp of an EU member state. The statutory health warning is printed in Polish or English depending on the batch, and the tax stamp plus the production code on the pouch identify the market version.
Imperial Brands’ wider roll-your-own portfolio includes Golden Virginia, Amber Leaf and Van Nelle. Two further hand-rolling brands stocked by this store are Doina and Magna.
