Who Makes Marlboro, and Who Owns the Name

Marlboro was first produced in 1924 in the United States by Philip Morris & Co., Ltd., Inc. The name comes from Great Marlborough Street in London, where the business of the tobacco merchant Philip Morris, who had opened his shop in London in 1847, later held premises.

Outside the United States the brand is produced by Philip Morris International Inc., a tobacco company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol PM, with operational headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. In the United States the Marlboro trade mark is held by Philip Morris USA, part of Altria Group. The two holdings have been separately owned since the spin-off of Philip Morris International in March 2008.

Philip Morris International sells Marlboro in more than 180 markets. The company’s cigarette factories in the European Union include Berlin in Germany, Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic and Kraków in Poland. Other cigarette brands made by the same group include L&M, Chesterfield, Parliament and Philip Morris.
