Who Produces R1 and Where

R1 is a cigarette brand of the Imperial Brands group. The parent company, Imperial Brands PLC, is headquartered in Bristol, England, and is listed on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker IMB; it traded as Imperial Tobacco Group PLC until February 2016.

The brand was introduced in 1984 by Reemtsma Cigarettenfabriken GmbH, the Hamburg cigarette manufacturer founded in 1910. Imperial Tobacco Group completed its acquisition of Reemtsma in May 2002, which placed R1 inside the group portfolio.

Polish-market R1 is produced by Imperial Tobacco Polska S.A., formerly Reemtsma Polska, which operates its production plant in Tarnowo Podgorne, near Poznan. In Germany the brand remains in the Reemtsma portfolio, where the lines include R1 Blue, R1 Red and R1 Slim Line Gold.

The R1 designation continues the Reemtsma No. 1 name used by the company in the 1970s.
